Brooklyn Antiquarian Book Fair September 7-8

The Brooklyn Antiquarian Book Fair, now in its 6^th year, returns to the Brooklyn Expo Center, Greenpoint, Brooklyn on Saturday and Sunday September 7-8.  This is a Marvin Getman event, 1 of 6 in the rare book and collectible paper shows he stages in the American northeast each year.  This year 113 dealers have signed up and several others are pending.  On Saturday the 7^th the day starts with a bagels and books preview from 10:00 am to noon.  The show opens at 11:00 am.  On Sunday the fair continues from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

This show is the official start of the fall season in the United States for collectible paper that will end in December with the approach of the holidays.

For this year’s event Brian Chidester is curating the dozen talks and presentations that extend over both days.  Lest you wonder his perspective, here’s how he describes himself:

I am “at heart a collector, and believe strongly that the greatest treasures are not the ones sitting in some museum or library, but rather in our attics and barns, antique stores and antiquarian fairs.  They are the portals by which we transport ourselves to other states of  consciousness and inspire us anew to think outside the box.”

Saturday September 7^th

Noon – “read In” – Mueller Report Graphic Novel Vol. 2 – Meet the author Barbara Slate for a book signing after the “Read In.”

1:00 – Presented by Alessandro Keegan – William Mumler and  the Invention of Spirit Photography.

2:00 – Presented by Pam Grossman and William Kiesel – Collecting Grimoires, Spell Books, and Witchcraft Tomes (A Presentation).

3:00  - Presented by Brian Cotnoir – The Atalanta Fugiens and the 17^th Century Alchemical Experience.

4:00 – Presented by Erin Waters – Interior Life:  Photography’s Place on and off the Wall in the Late 19^th and Early 20^th Centuries.

5:00 – Presented by Will Baker – Cabinets of Curiosities in Academic and Research Libraries:  Collections and Sensibilities.

6:00 – Presented by Stacey Robinson – A Dream Today:  Imagined Landscapes, Liminal Spaces, Speculative Futures, and Alternate Histories in Black Literature and Music.

Sunday September 8^th

11:00am – 1:00pm – Free Appraisal Clinic.

Noon – Presented by Kevin R. Johnson – The Celluloid Paper Trail:  Identification and Description of Twentieth Century Film Scripts.

1:00 – Presented  by Philip March Jones – The Comic Art of Charles Williams (1955-1998).

2:00 – Show & Tale:  My Favorite Things (Children’s Book Edition) Moderated by Martie McNabb, Founder, Show & Tale, Every Thing has a Story.

3:00 – Presented by Stephen Romano and Brian Chidester – Charles A. A. Dellschau and the Mythology of Flight.
